Resources for GFU Commuters

George Fox University (GFU) continues to offer extensive commuter resources during Covid-19.
GFU has over 900 commuters attending this year, and previous resources will continue to be open to people who travel to campus for classes according to David Johnstone, the associate dean of students and director of commuter life.
“Trying to create a sense of community, extending support and providing a sense of hospitality is still important for us,” said Johnstone. “In this time of COVID-19 we are particularly trying to discern the impact of protocols on commuters ... It is a diverse population with lots of needs.”
Johnstone said that although commuter lunches have been postponed, commuters are still welcome to use the FoxHole lounge, Bruin Den, library, Academic Resource Center, and the Hadlock Activities Center. Health and counseling services are available to all GFU students.
“The University purposefully had tents erected for their [commuters] benefit in order to provide more space for commuters,” said Johnstone.
According to the GFU Commuter Life webpage, commuters can take advantage of the Commuter VIP meal plan. This meal plan consists of an $80 punch card good for 12 meals in Canyon Commons.
If a commuter brings their own food, they have access to microwaves located in the FoxHole Lounge, Bruin Den, Bridge Cafe, Intercultural Resource Center, spiritual life office and student life office.
Additional commuter amenities allow students to rent lockers located in the FoxHole for $10 from Student Life. If you wish to rent a locker, simply email Student Life.
Masks for students who have forgotten them can be found in the library and Student Life Center. “Apps like Campus Clear, and self identifying concerns on the Student Support Network become means of initiating contact and resources,” Johnstone said.
The fall semester of 2020 can be seen in a positive light for commuters this year. More virtual events are taking place this year, allowing students who commute easier access to student activities that used to be held physically on campus.
Johnstone said, “The commuter assistants are purposefully reaching out to the commuting underclassmen. We are also connecting with any and all commuting students who we learn are ill, impacted by COVID, struggling with academics, or were evacuated by the fires.”
Students are encouraged to reach out to the Commuter Life Team if they have any questions or concerns. They can be reached by email at commuterlife@georgefox.edu.
