Newberg, Ore. - As temperatures continue to drop, it is important to make sure that you have the necessary resources to face the oncoming colder weather.
Whether you are going home for winter break or staying on campus, it is necessary to know what you can do to stay safe in these upcoming months. One of the most dangerous places on campus in wet and cold weather is the bridge by Canyon Commons.
The bridge can get very icy and slippery, and water tends to pool in certain areas along the length of the bridge as well. There are little white and blue thermometer sensors at either end of the bridge, which can help inform you if it is freezing outside. Pay attention and use caution when crossing if they indicate freezing temperatures.
Plant Services also salts the bridge in dangerous conditions to assist with traction and safety, but if it is not salted in the colder and wetter weather, make sure to walk along the edge. Watch your footing, and hold the railing if necessary.
The Center for Disease Control provides additional information on staying safe and warm in the winter months. Some tips include:
Dress warm and stay dry
Wear a hat, mittens, and scarf if necessary
Wear water-resistant coats and boots
Dress in layers

It is also important to use extra precaution on the roads when driving in wet, icy, and dangerous conditions.
Drive slowly
Keep extra food and warmth in the car in case of emergency
Keep your fuel tank at least half full
Accelerate and decelerate slowly
Increase your following distance
Always let someone know where you are if you are traveling alone
