On Oct. 25, students joined George Fox University (GFU) President Robin Baker and his wife, Ruth Baker, in the Roberts Center kitchen for the Baking with the Bakers event.

The event was proposed by the student government to the Bakers. “We were really interested in creating an event that would create community between the Bakers and the students on campus,” said Grace Lalley, ASC vice president.

According to Lalley, the Bakers were very excited about the idea and had initially suggested having the event at their home.

While the turnout was smaller than expected at only five students, those who attended enjoyed their time learning from the Bakers in a close-knit group.

Students worked in pairs as the Bakers led them through the process of making pulled-pork enchilada casserole. While they didn’t eat the meal together, students were sent home with a full pan of casserole.

Students got to see their president in a different light. “President Baker does not know how to cook so he was nervous about that, but he learned,” said Lalley. Attendees got to witness this learning curve as Ruth would often scold him for instructing students to do the next step with a “No, Robin, not yet!” from across the room.
