Spanning the 40 days before Easter, Lent is a time of repentance in which believers choose to give something up until the Thursday before Easter Sunday. Whether that is fasting from certain foods or choosing to change habits in order to recognize our need for God, this time encourages reflection and growth.

Professor of English Jessica Hughes got the idea for the Spanish Enrichment Program as she sat in on a parent meeting for the Chehalem Online Academy (COA) last semester. As part of COA, students get $500 for enrichment activities. Many parents were inquiring about foreign language options at this meeting, but none were available.

Some of GFU’s most beloved traditions like the 80s Dance and Polar Plunge are all thanks to this student and faculty team. Senior Esmaya Hendrickson has been a part of Student Activities since her sophomore year, starting out as an event staff member and working up to her current position as event lead.

It is a typical Friday night and, as everyone settles into their groups in the lobby of a freshman dorm at George Fox University (GFU), a student marches in and declares, “Are they gonna give me a ticket if I park there?” then turns and points to their car parked in the now empty staff parking lot. The ‘they’ the student was referring to was, of course, Campus Public Safety (CPS), with whom most students do not interact outside of the occasional ticket on their car or an awkward phone call after locking themselves out of their rooms. That is the mission of the GFU Everything podcast, started by roommates CJ Hollis and Sean Rubesh living in Edwards Hall. They try to uncover what people–particularly artists–are like outside of GFU.

In the fall, George Fox University (GFU) sent out a survey for students to complete on behalf of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) and the creation of their Thriving Quotient. According to their website, the CCCU is a global association whose “mission is to advance the cause of Christ-centered higher education and to help our institutions transform lives by faithfully relating scholarship and service to biblical truth.” The results, including those for GFU’s student body, were sent to students on Feb. 5.

This year, the Intercultural Resource Center (IRC) has added to its Mosaic Scholar Program to include mentorship for first-generation students in addition to Mosaic Scholar students. The program, named the LEAD program, pairs first-generation first-year students with an upper class person as a mentor to provide more support during their first year of college.

During the second week of Chapel, Dean of Spiritual Life at George Fox University (GFU) Jamie Johnson introduced the new University Pastor of Spiritual Formation Programs, Cyndi Murillo. She promptly made enemies by admitting she isn’t the biggest fan of coffee, a cardinal sin in the Pacific Northwest. Jokes aside, the new campus pastor is making waves for positive spiritual interaction on campus by organizing Life Groups and helping students set up events through the Spiritual Life Office (SPiL) that are unique and powerful.

According to KGW8, the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, generally referred to around campus as simply “the stink bugs,” are common in Asia. They were found on the east coast around 20 years ago, and their population in Oregon is booming for several reasons; the main one being climate change. The stink bugs prefer warmer climates, and as Oregon gets warmer, it is easier for the bugs to thrive in the state.
