Bon

Bon Appétit, the on-campus meal-provider for George Fox University (GFU), held a town hall for students on Feb. 23 in Canyon Commons. The objective of the town hall was to provide an opportunity for students to share concerns or questions they have about the food that Bon Appétit has been serving.

Both the head of Bon Appétit (students and staff often refer to Bon Appétit as “the Bon”) and the head of housing were there to answer questions. Students had the option to ask their questions anonymously through a QR code provided during the town hall.

The Crescent attended and has summarized the questions and answers from the town hall below:

Q1: Why is there no Pizza at dinner?

Currently, the Bon cannot find someone to cook pizza for dinner but hopes to have pizza at dinner next year.

Q2: What happened to the Deli bar that was here last year?

The Bon removed the Deli bar to have food that would be more friendly to athletes. But the athlete bar was not as popular as they thought, so the Deli bar will return next year.

Q3: Why do students sometimes find raw chicken in their food?

Cooking the chicken is a very lengthy process, and cooks use a thermometer to make sure the chicken is being cooked correctly. Sometimes some pieces of chicken are not cooked all the way through. If this happens to any student they are urged to ask to see a cook so they can make sure to fix the problem and ensure no other students accidentally get raw chicken.

Q4: Why are there so many chicken options?

Chicken is cheaper meat so it is less expensive to serve—they are trying to make sure to have more variety with their meat options.

Q5: What do you do if you have food allergies or restrictions?

Students with dietary restrictions can file paperwork at Disabilities and Accessibilities Services to make sure they get safe meals. The chef is available during breakfast, lunch, or dinner to explain what options are available.

Q6: Why must all students living on campus have a food plan?

Meal plans encourage community building at meal times, which is a core value at the university.
