You may be asking yourself, what is this “Tiger King” that everyone is talking about? If you are asking yourself this, then you are living under a rock, but that’s okay because here is my spoiler-free mini synopsis: This Netflix docu-series goes behind the scenes on the crazy world of big cat owners, specifically Joe “Exotic” Maldonado-Passage, the “Tiger King” who runs a big cat zoo. You’ll get a glimpse into an entirely different culture: one filled with lies, lawsuits, limb loss, and a real-life liger (lion + tiger).
It’s so binge-able.
There are only seven episodes in this Netflix docu-series with a special reunion episode that was just released. My family watched it all in one day. While that might sound embarrassing, you will most likely find yourself doing the same thing. Due to the true crime nature of this documentary it is easy to find yourself deep in the story as you try to predict its ending.
Every episode ends on a cliff-hanger.
This is another reason for its binge-ability. At the end of each episode a new aspect of the world of big cat owners is introduced and the story of Joe “Exotic” unfolds. They leave you wanting more.
It’s insanely unpredictable.
While watching “Tiger King,” you may think you know what is going to happen, but you don’t. Not everyone who should get arrested does, not everyone lives until the last episode, not everyone ends up in the same romantic relationship as they were in at the beginning of the limited series, and not everyone ends up with the same number of limbs as they had when filming began.
It’s fascinating.
Honestly, I was not interested in this show before my family started watching it. But, it is so interesting. I was hooked after the first episode. The lives of all those featured in the documentary are each so multifaceted, you will long to know more about them and the very nontraditional life choices they have made.
It’s culturally relevant.
Not only is it trending with regards to memes and Buzzfeed quizzes, but there are already remakes in the works. Actors such as Brad Pitt, David Spade, Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, and Zac Efron have been requested by the documentees to play themselves in possible theatrical editions of this story. Before you watch these editions, you’ll have to see the original telling of the story, though.
